The Short Story
A DJ formerly based in Hawaii, Danny Yun has been spinning dance music for over a decade. Playing "dance music between 125 and 130 bpm", his sets have never ceased to satisfy dancefloors hungry for funky and hypnotic rhythms. From deep house lounges to peak hour underground venues to sunrises on the beach, Danny has played them all with an experienced hand and a soul to spark up the desire to dance.
He's held several residencies in his time serving Hawaii's growing scene and watched venues and events come and go, all the while keeping his head down and forging through it all. Recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, he's ready to continue putting it down for dancefloors everywhere. From the sweat filled heat of the full on underground to the glitz of swanky nightclubs, from massive raves to intimate settings, indoors and out, Danny drops vinyl (and CDs, welcome to the 21st Century) with a passion and skill that has led him to share the stage with some of the worlds greatest talents.
He's played events with the likes of Steve Porter, Bassnectar, Max Graham, Taylor, Kimball Collins, D:Fuse, Scott Bond, Huda Hudia, Josh Ryan, and Alice DeeJay's Pronti and Kalmani. He's even been accorded the honor of opening for DJs Behrouz and MV ("In House We Trust 2") on separate occassions, as well as being selected to open for Luke Chable's Hawaii appearance and final leg of his Renaissance Therapy Sessions CD release tour. All of this attests to the confidence placed in Danny's music and experience behind the decks.
History of Rhythm
Danny Yun has been playing music since he was eleven years old. He began formal training in all percussion instruments, from drum set to melodic percussion like marimba and everything in between (the triangle was especially challenging). It was rhythm that appealed most to him as an adolescent; this never changed as he grew older.
In the mid 90's, Danny traded in his drum set for decks and a mixer and tried his hand at house and trance, music popular in the Austin area where he was introduced to the rave scene and electronic dance music as a whole. He took on the moniker K Phoenyxx after a nickname from his Korean heritage and played small house parties.
Not yet ready to take it seriously, the spotlight was practically forced onto him when a promoter heard him play and immediately booked him for an event in Augusta, Georgia. An untried Danny found himself with a plane ticket in his hand and a bag of records at his side, ready to fly halfway across the country for his first gig: a closing set after Florida's legendary Huda Hudia.
That night was magic for Danny, as a packed warehouse with a thousand people moved to the music. As the lights came on and the people left the building, you could hear people humming the melody from the closing track. Danny was hooked and ready for more.
Later, Danny moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he immediately became a fixture in the scene. Within a month, he had established a residency at the city's only afterhours spot and began receiving bookings for raves and other events. A couple of years later, Danny became involved with promotion and had a hand in throwing several successful events.
Currently, Danny lives in the Santa Cruz mountains and plays a blend of house, techno, progressive, and breakbeats, seamlessly melding tracks together into an evolving storyline. His passion for the music is easily seen, translating into dance; regardless of which side of the decks he is on. With the stamina to play for hours upon hours, Danny was a favorite among many in Hawaii's underground scene, known to hold dancers on their feet all night long.
His residencies in Hawaii have included Evolutions Afterhours, at the time the only afterhours venue in Waikiki; The Maze, a multi-room nightclub in the heart of Waikiki; Fluid in Chinatown, a progressive house weekly; The Speakeasy at the Living Room, a weekly event that had hosted several notable talents such as Moshic and Jimmy Van M.; and many other weeklies that have come and gone.
With an eye on production, he is ready to step it up a notch, creating the music that he loves to play. It is only a matter of time before he catches someone's attention with what he has to say.
